Book Clubs
Students become stronger in reading by something that seems simple: reading. They also can make the strongest connections through peer discussions. Book clubs combine the practice of reading and peer discussions within the classroom.
The first meeting of book clubs lead to students determining jobs for each person. They keep track of jobs in their reading notebook. Talking tokens are also used to control air time and make sure everyone is participating in discussions.
From their book club books, students construct reading response letters. Through conferences and these letters, I can determine if they understand the text or if adjustments need to be made. It also gives them a chance to share their connections, growing deeper as the year progresses.
Mini-lessons are also connected to book clubs. After practicing a skill with our class read aloud, the students apply the objective to their book club.
